But Julia chooses to keep quiet
Scenario
Julia is a star at an elite tennis academy. When her coach is investigated and suddenly suspended, all the players at the club are encouraged to speak out. Belgium’s official entry in the « Best International Feature Film » category; 97. In the Academy Awards category in 2025. This is not a good movie. It’s a nice enough story though. But the script could use some tweaking. It’s like they have certain scenes in mind and then skip them.
Why is she silent?
It has some good scenes (one with the fight in the bar comes to mind), but not enough to keep the whole thing afloat. The actors are all at the top of their game. Especially the young semi-tennis pro who plays Julia. She really does her best with the material she provides. But even that’s not enough. There are too many unanswered questions: What really happened between Julia and Jeremy? One minute she is in trouble with the new coach, the next minute she is being coached only by him (I mean, what the F.. is?) So, story-wise, this is just a big FAILURE!
There is no lighting
But here is my biggest problem with this movie. This director just doesn’t know how to make a movie!! The framing is right and wrong. There were shadows everywhere. In one scene you can only make out two silhouettes talking to each other. He never cuts between different objects. It’s like they only have access to one camera. Now maybe (and I’m just guessing) he thinks it brings peace and calm to his movie.
Sometimes it was just unwatchable
But to me it was just annoying. And if you decide not to have any cuts in the movie, make sure you keep the key frame and let us (the audience) look where we want/need to. No, this director decides for himself, we don’t need this information. So in many scenes we see people talking to other people who have their heads (half) cut off or you can only make out half of their faces. What do they teach in film school these days??!! This film was also shot on an iPhone??!! When I saw that Nicholas Karakatsanis was the DOP, my jaw dropped! He actually called (word for word) that phone.
And that’s good
For me it all boils down to two things: either this director doesn’t know the basics of filmmaking, or he just doesn’t care. Maybe he just wants to tell his stories. But film is a visual medium. And here it was just handled badly. And as a paying customer, I want more.
